Today we welcome the first official day of winter - trading our sunglasses and short-sleeves for radiators and jumpers. We thought that instead of shying you away from cycling in the colder months, we’d gear up and give you some tips on how to make a winter ride as easy as a those blissful summer days.

Tip #1: Clothing - The most obvious tip for cycling in the winter is to bundle up, and having the right rainproof, windproof, and thermal gear is a no brainer. If you’re new to riding in the winter but want to take a stab at it anyhow, layering your clothing is always a plus. In addition, having a good pair of gloves and glasses to protect your eyes and extremities is always recommended. The more the merrier…

Tip #2: Bad weather can equal tire punctures - Wet road conditions are usually not your best friend, so it’s important to be prepared and always carry some extra tubes and a pump for those worst case scenarios. In addition, make sure your tires can handle the weather conditions you're about to face!

Tip #3: Bike lights - While this is important in the daylight at all times throughout the year, having a bike light in the winter is that much more crucial. LED lights are easy to find and it’s always smart to carry a few extra batteries in case they run out.

Tip #4: Bulk up - Be sure to have some food and drink on hand. While the cold weather may turn you away from staying hydrated, remember that you are sweating under all of your gear, therefore losing a lot of liquid. Stay hydrated, stay satisfied, and by all means don’t stay hungry.

Tip #5: Mudguards - Cycling in the winter can definitely mean cycling in the mud, and in an effort to keep yourselves (somewhat) clean, these are a must have for a winter cycle.

Cycling in the winter is an act that should be embraced, and while the sight of cold may shy you and your bike away from getting out into cooler temperatures, these quick tips are sure to make your ride all the more enjoyable.
