On the Drava river lie the two largest (artificial) lakes in Croatia. Just north of the “Dubrava” lake is the 800-year-old town of Prelog, or “Prilok” as locals call it. Surrounded by beautiful lakes of the Drava on one side and farmland on the other, Prelog, one of the youngest towns in Croatia, has developed into the industrial hub for the region.

What’s special about the “Prilocki Marathon”? On the 21st of May, it will be time for its 8th edition. This marathon isn’t your usual one. The riders regardless of which route they choose do not need to follow the specific roads, rather they need to punch their cards at the key points of the race. Three different routes will take place this year with the addition being the road marathon, but all start from Prelog and heading for the top of the Kalnik.

Big” marathon takes riders from Prelog to the top of the Kalnik (680), then towards Ivanscica mountain (1060m) and at the end to the highest point of Međimurje at Mohokos hilltop (343m). From there it’s roughly 25 km back to Prelog for a total of 160-180km and 2000m of climbing.

"Small" marathon takes riders to the top of Kalnik and back to Prelog for a total of 80km/800m of climbs while the road marathon will be similar to the big marathon, only riders won’t climb Ivanscica due to gravel roads and finish with a total of 150km/1600m of climbing. Technicalities, like length and total climbs, are a fun fact to seasoned riders, but recreational riders prefer the views that Ivanscica, Kalnik and to a degree Mohokos will give them.
