3 Lakes to Visit by Bike in Croatia

Croatia is blessed with some spectacular landscapes most notably its idyllic islands, coastline and the crystal clear Adriatic sea. But the beauty goes beyond the coast and where you'll find rolling green hills, dramatic mountain ranges and some superb rivers and lakes.

Here we have three lakes to explore on two wheels.

Lake Peruča

This man made lake is actually a reservoir on the Cetina River and doubles as a fantastic recreational area where you can partake in swimming, fishing, rowing and various other water sports. The history of the reservoir goes back to 1958, where a 56m dam was constructed near the village of Donji Biletić, slowly flooding the area and submerging some low-lying villages and an Orthodox monastery.

Today the lake is 29 square kilometres and has some great cycle trails which follow the contours of the lake taking you through charming Dalmatian hinterland villages and some stunning scenery.

If you have the legs for it, ride a further 20km up the river and visit the spellbinding source of the Cetina river.

Lake Vrana

Located beside Pakoštane Lake Vrana Nature Park is Croatia's largest natural lake. Declared a nature park in 1999 for its biodiversity, natural waterbird habitat and natural springs, lake Vrana is also a superb cycling destination. There is a 40km cycle trail which encircles the lake taking in the nature parks best sites. This trail will take you up Majden hill where you'll get a spectacular view of the Vrana Lake ornithological reserve, then all the way to Kamenjak lookout where you get magnificent views of Vrana Lake and beyond to the islands of Pašman, Murter and the Kornati Islands National Park.

There are sections of the trail where your senses will be overwhelmed with the scent of wild plants and herbs and you can take a rest under the shade of a pine tree in Drage. Vrana really is a pleasant cycling destination well worth a visit.

Lake Dubrava

The largest of four reservoirs built on the Drava river, Lake Dubrava, supplies the water for a hydro electric plant and is bordered by Varaždin and Medimurje counties. The lake is used for all types of recreational activities including a small airfield for ultralight aircraft. The lake is also an ideal cycling destination with some interesting riding around the lake. The town of Prelog is the only settlement on the lake and a great starting point to explore the lake on two wheels.
