Osvajanje “Garmischa 2016” was more than just a normal local race event, it was also for a good local “Humanitarian” cause. Waking up early Sunday before the registration at 7:30 AM was probably the easiest part for some cyclist. The damp weather did not hold anyone back as they were ready to face a real challenge of a 200 meter incline straight up the hill. Excitement was in the air as 100 participants, friends and family members were there to cheer each other on. “Coffee bar Canimeč” was the gathering spot for the registration in Čeminac (Baranja region just on the outskirts of Osijek).
Documents were checked in as contestants received their Numbers. For many it was all about having fun and helping to raise money with a 10 Kuna registration fee that went towards children in need. The competition was open to everyone that was fit to be able to compete. Children were allowed to participate as long as they were accompanied by an adult and wore safety helmets. The riders were broken into groups to make it fair competition.
Event planners categorized into four groups to compete in winning the “2016 Garmischa.” (We left the translation in just for reference if you should want to participate in the future events.)
The four groups are:
Men (who will be slower) muškarci (tko će sporije)
Women (who will be slower) žene(tko će sporije)
Pushing bike (who will be faster) Men gurači bicikala (tko će brže) – muškarci,
Pushing bike (who will be faster) Women gurači bicikala (tko će brže) – žene.
The terrain was a quite country road surrounded by historic vineyards and farm lands in Baranja region. Adrenaline was running as Cyclist gathered at the base of the hill was the final preparation. The route starts with a very short level run at the foot of the hill. Cyclist were able to get some leverage or momentum for the hard push up the hill. For some contestants it was easier to walk the bike up the hill. (Don’t forget that it was a 200 meter climb.) Each rider was timed from an event marshal that waited on top of the hills plateau. Once at the top riders felt a great sign of relief as it was finished, and were able to look back at the accomplishment achieved. Zoran Cindrić (Zoran Osijek) did a great job capturing the climb in this video.
Cyclist experiencing the warm hospitality of the region, once they reached the top finish line. They could relax and enjoy free refreshments of juice and energy drinks. After a brief stay they would head towards the next segment of the event. The festivities included local culinary cuisine and tastings from the Winery “Svjetli dvori” in Karanac. (Website: Svjetli Dvori). The traditional Baranja regional food was present with the cheese, meats and other great dishes. A brief history is that this winery is located in the village Karanac which is a popular tourist destination.
It is known for “Graševine “wine, with a great place to enjoy the tasting and atmosphere in its old fashioned wine cellar. The location is well over several centuries dated back to the reign of the Hungarians. One can easily see why Garmischa will become an annual event. With a spectacular view and an area full of rich history and culture for this bicycle event. To finish the day off with closing ceremonies of announcing the winners and handing over of two mountain bikes to the twin sisters. The best part was not always about winning but to be giving to the community.
