The city of Zagreb is competing in this year's European Cycling Challenge under the slogan “I ride for Zagreb, I ride for myself!”
The European Cycling Challenge is a program that was initiated by the city of Bologna in order to push European cities to encourage their citizens to use bicycles on their commutes, everyday. The ultimate aim of the initiative is to reduce the amount of CO2 in the air throughout European cities. In May 2016, 45,911 citizens from 52 European cities joined the effort, recording a total of 3,969,581 kilometers cycled. This initiative promotes cycling as the healthiest and purest form of transport.
Last May in Zagreb, 894 citizens downloaded the free mobile application as part of the European Cycling Challenge. During the month of May, citizens of Zagreb cycled 42,585 kilometers, thereby saving 8602 kg of CO2. Last year Zagreb came in 24th place. This year, Zagreb enters the race for the third time and hopes to place even better!
Project partners, the Croatian Postal Bank, will also donate one kuna per kilometer cycled to the Children's Home in Nazorova.
